On May 31, 2022, Fujifilm introduced the “X-series” mirrorless camera “X-H2S” that uses an APS-C size image sensor at the online event “X Summit OMIYA 2022” on its YouTube channel. Announced. It is a new flagship model of the “X series”, and it is one of the attention of professional high amateurs with extremely high speed performance that meets professional use. Since I was the first to touch the beta machine under development, let’s introduce its features with an external image.
The series’ first stacked “X-Trans CMOS 5 HS” and “X-Processor 5” are adopted to achieve the highest performance in the history of the X series.
Mirrorless of Fujifilm “X series” is flagship model “XH series”, “X-Pro series” equipped with hybrid finder, single-lens reflex style high-performance model “XT series”, compact and lightweight model with minimal design A total of 5 lines are available, including the “XE series” and the entry model “XA series” without a finder.
Regarding the flagship “XH series”, in March 2018, the “X-H1”, the first in-body image stabilization machine in the “X series”, appeared as the first model. It gained popularity as a high-performance and robust mirrorless camera. However, since then, the successor model of the “X-H1” has not appeared, and the “X-T4” released in May 2020 is equipped with in-body image stabilization, so the “X series” The presence of the “XH series” in the movie was fading. Many people would have thought, “Isn’t this series going to be abolished as it is?”
The point is that the new model “X-H2S” of the “XH series”, which appeared after breaking the silence of about 4 years, was developed with a focus on high-speed performance. The 5th generation image sensor “X-Trans CMOS 5 HS” with approximately 26.16 million pixels and the image processing engine “X-Processor 5” were adopted as the core devices. The “X-Trans CMOS 5 HS” is the first X-Trans CMOS to use a laminated structure, achieving a high-speed readout that is approximately four times faster than before. “X-Processor 5” achieves both low power consumption and high-speed processing by miniaturizing the process. With this 5th generation mission-critical device, the “X-H2S” has achieved the highest performance in the history of the “X Series” for both still image shooting and video shooting.
Achieves blackout-free ultra-high-speed continuous shooting at approximately 40 frames / sec. AF supports subject detection
The continuous shooting performance symbolizes the high performance of the “X-H2S”. As of May 31, 2022, the fastest APS-C mirrorless camera has achieved ultra-high-speed continuous shooting (AF / AE tracking, blackout free) at approximately 40 frames / sec with an electronic shutter. It also realizes high-speed AF / AE calculation at 120 times / sec, enabling highly accurate AF / AE tracking continuous shooting. In addition, the buffer memory has been strengthened to improve the sustainability of continuous shooting. The number of continuous shots that can be taken at approximately 40 frames / sec is 184 for JPEG and 138 for RAW + JPEG. When shooting continuously at about 15 frames per second with a mechanical shutter, the number of JPEGs is 1000 or more, and the number of RAW + JPEGs is 400. It maintains a high continuous shooting speed even after the buffer is full, and during continuous shooting at about 40 frames / sec in JPEG, it is said that continuous shooting will continue
at 20 frames / sec even after the buffer is full.
AF has also evolved, and the read speed during high-speed continuous shooting has been tripled compared to the “X-T4”, achieving more accurate AF. The AF algorithm has also been newly developed, and it is said that performance such as prediction of moving subjects and capture of small subjects has been improved. In addition, it is newly equipped with subject detection AF developed using deep learning technology. Not only the face and eyes of a person, but also “animals”, “birds”, “cars”, “motorcycles & bicycles”, “airplanes”, and “trains” can be detected.
Uses an operation system similar to a general high-end machine. The finder has also evolved to a magnification of 0.8x
The operability of the “X-H2S” has also been greatly revised. Instead of Fujifilm’s original specifications that use a shutter speed dial and sensitivity dial, it uses a shooting mode dial, which is similar to a general high-end model.
On the upper surface of the body, the left shoulder is equipped with a shooting mode dial, and the right shoulder is equipped with a sub LCD monitor, sensitivity button, white balance button, etc. On the front, the focus mode switching lever has become a function button, enabling custom registration. Another feature is that many buttons use rubber keys to achieve more reliable button operation.
The shutter button has a longer half-press / full-press stroke than the “X-H1” in the initial state without stroke adjustment. It’s not as feather-touch as the “X-H1”, but it has an appropriate amount of pushing, so it gives the impression that more reliable operation is possible. The impact of the shutter operation is also suppressed considerably, and I felt that it had a better feeling than the “X-T4”.
In addition, please pay attention to the performance of the electronic viewfinder (EVF) in the operability of the “X-H2S”. It is equipped with a high-performance viewfinder that supports a magnification of 0.8x (35mm format equivalent), approximately 5.76 million dots, and 120fps display. The point is that the new optical system of all aspherical lenses is adopted, and a clear view is realized from the center to the periphery. In addition, the reaction time of the eye sensor has been reduced by about half, improving the usability of small details.
