Lightness is justice! About 880g 14-inch notebook PC “ExpertBook B9” review

ASUS JAPAN has released a new model of the business laptop ” ExpertBook B9 “. It is a mobile notebook equipped with a 14-inch display, and is attractive for its ultra-light weight of about 880g (lightest model) and its tough body that has passed tests that comply with the US military standard MIL standard (MIL-STD-810H). The new model uses Intel’s 12th generation processor for the CPU, and the basic performance has been raised. Let’s check the ability of the new model of “ExpertBook B9”.
There are 6 models in the lineup for individuals.
First, let’s organize the lineup and specifications. “ExpertBook B9” has a model for individuals and a model for corporations, but this time we will take up the model for individuals.

There are a total of 6 models in the personal model lineup. Broadly speaking, it can be divided into a Core i7 model with a “Core i7-1255U” and a Core i5 model with a “Core i5-1235U”. The Core i7 model is equipped with a 66Wh battery, weighs about 1005g, and has a battery life of about 20 hours. On the other hand, the Core i5 model is equipped with a 33Wh battery and weighs about 880g, which is very lightweight, but the battery life is only about 11 hours. It seems that it will be a turning point whether to take performance or take lightness.

The memory and storage capacity installed in addition to the CPU are different. The Core i7 model has a lineup of ultra-high spec models with 32GB of memory and 4TB of storage. The Core i5 model has a maximum of 16GB of memory, but a model with a 4TB SSD is available. In addition, there are differences depending on the business integration software installed.
The main body is for business, so it has a simple and calm atmosphere. The color is navy blue with casual glitter named “Star Black”. The top plate is made of lightweight and durable magnesium-lithium alloy, so it doesn’t feel cheap. After using it for a few days, I personally felt that it was good because the dirt was less noticeable. It has a matte texture and does not look luxurious, but it feels good to be able to use it in a clean state.

The 800g range is still light!
This time I tried the Core i5 model weighing about 880g. The model number is “KC0282WS”. A mobile notebook feels light enough even at about 1kg, but this model in the 800g range is a different dimension of lightness. With a comfortable feeling of bare feet, you can easily bring it anywhere. With the diversification of work styles and the increasing number of opportunities to work in the office, at home, or in other locations, this lightness is very appealing. However, the AC adapter is a 65W type and is surprisingly large. The cable was also thick, and the actual weight was 323g. Since it supports USB PD, people who want to carry an AC adapter every day may want to look for a compact AC adapter.
The body size is about 320 (width) x 203 (depth) x 14.9 (height) mm. Considering that it has a 14-inch display, it is quite compact. Not only is it a narrow frame design, but the aspect ratio of the screen is 16: 9, so the depth is suppressed.

There are concerns about the robustness of lightweight laptops, but this model has passed tests that comply with MIL standards, so you can carry it around with peace of mind. It can withstand harsh high temperature environments, so you can work outdoors without worry. You can’t miss the fact that the keyboard is splash-proof. Don’t let your guard down, but you can prevent accidentally spilling a drink and making your PC unusable.

High processing power like the 12th generation Core processor even with Core i5
Let’s check the performance of the Core i5 model. As mentioned above, the CPU is the 12th generation Core processor “Core i5-1235U”, which is called the development code name “Alder Lake”. A 10-core 12-thread CPU consisting of 2 Performance-cores and 8 Efficient-cores. It can be said that it is a CPU with excellent power efficiency for ultra-slim PCs with a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 15W. The memory is 16GB of LPDDR5-5200 (not expandable), and the storage is 4TB with PCI Express 4.0 x4 connection. A large-capacity SSD of 4TB is a nice spec for those who handle large amounts of data, although the price jumps.

The result of the benchmark program “CINEBENCH R23” that measures CPU performance was a reasonable score of 3916 for CPU (multi-core). I can’t say it’s explosive, but the Core i5 can get a score of nearly 4000, which is unique to the latest CPU.

The result of “PCMark10 Professional Edition”, which measures the overall performance of a personal computer, is 4783. It easily exceeds 3000, which is considered to be a standard for comfortable use. It is thought that the use of high-speed memory and SSD also leads to this good score.
If you value performance, you should choose the Core i7 model, but even the Core i5 model will be able to handle it smoothly if your main work is Office or a web browser. The memory is a high-speed LPDDR5-5200, and the SSD is a PCI Express 4.0 x4 connection, so it doesn’t slow down even if you open a lot of tabs, and file compression and decompression is fast.

Full of useful functions! Good usability
Finally, let’s take a look at usability. The display is a 1920 x 1080 14-inch liquid crystal. Full HD resolution with 16:9 aspect ratio. Recently, models with vertically long screens such as 16:10 and 3:2 are increasing, but this model has an orthodox aspect ratio. Non-glare type with no reflection. Although the brightness is not published, it was very bright and easy to see outdoors and by the window. Although it is for business, it is equipped with a high-quality display.
