Cheap SIM with cheaper monthly smartphone charges compared to major mobile carriers. I’m glad that the charge is cheap, but it is said that the essential communication speed is slow. In order to find out what the actual situation is, we investigated the communication speeds of the 12 popular lines. This time, which was carried out on July 14th and 15th, 2022, some of the cheap SIMs that use the DoCoMo line showed a significant increase in speed.
1. [Introduction] Communication speed survey method
Cheap SIMs tend to slow down depending on the time of day and location. For example, in places where the population is extremely concentrated, such as around 12:00 noon on weekdays, which is a break, or from evening to midnight when private communication increases, and around terminal stations in urban areas, communication is congested and the line speed is high. Easy to drop. However, the degree varies from telecommunications company to telecommunications company, and can be said to be one of the important comparison factors.
In this survey, the area around Tokyo Station in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo was selected as the area with high population density, and the area around Sakudaira Station in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture was selected as the area with low population density. We are investigating the communication speed of 12-line cheap SIMs at 12 o’clock and 18 o’clock where communication is concentrated, and at 14 o’clock when communication is relatively low.
Considering the situation of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), since March 2020, the investigation has been continued only around Sakudaira Station in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, where the author resides, but in May 2022. The investigation around Tokyo Station was resumed in earnest.
The survey dates will be July 15, 2022 (Friday) around Tokyo Station and July 14 (Thursday) around Sakudaira Station. The terminal used for the measurement is Motorola’s “moto g50 5G”.
There are two survey methods, “speed test app” and “app download from Play store” as follows.
[Survey method 1]
Using the speed test application “Speedtest –Internet speed” (Ookla), the average value of the uplink / downlink communication speed measured 5 times at each point and each time zone was calculated. Measurement errors are not included in the number of times, and only the results that can be measured normally are adopted.
[Survey method 2]
The communication speed at the time of downloading the application is measured as a situation close to the actual perceived speed. Download the app from the Play Store with the communication speed displayed by “Communication Speed Monitor” (Lufesu Inc.), and record the speed transition during that time with the video screenshot function of “moto g50 5G”. After the measurement was completed, the video was checked and the average download speed was calculated. In order to measure within a limited time, if the download of the application does not finish even after 1 minute from the start, the installation is interrupted and the average speed up to that point is calculated.
The following 12 types of cheap SIMs are the subjects of the survey. The “moto g50 5G” is compatible with 5G networks, but all 12 lines are being investigated using 4G networks.
2. What is the measurement result at 12 o’clock during the lunch break when the speed tends to slow down?
Let’s take a closer look at the survey results. First of all, it is from the results around Tokyo Station about the 12 o’clock level, which is easily crowded by users who are taking a break.
The overall average speed test app is 17.24 Mbps for downlink (9.38 Mbps last month) and 6.70 Mbps for uplink (6.13 Mbps). Looking at each line, the downlink communication speed is 44.57 Mbps for OCN mobile ONE, 39.10 Mbps for UQ mobile, 31.57 Mbps for yu mobile, and 30.07 Mbps for Links Mate. Ymobile’s 18.63 Mbps was the fastest upstream communication speed.
The average download speed of the app is 6.56Mbps (4.58Mbps). By line, 22.95 Mbps of Japan Communication SIM was the fastest, followed by 19.23 Mbps of UQ mobile, 14.02 Mbps of Ymobile, and 10.03 Mbps of mineo (A plan).

Next, let’s take a look at the results around 12 o’clock around Sakudaira Station.
The overall average speed test app is 15.32Mbps for downlink (16.56Mbps last month) and 6.10Mbps for uplink (5.95Mbps). Looking at each line, the downlink communication speed is faster in the order of 44.27 Mbps for Ymobile, 40.40 Mbps for UQ mobile, and 26.77 Mbps for OCN Mobile ONE. UQ mobile’s 23.57 Mbps was the fastest upstream communication speed.
The average download speed of the app is 8.18Mbps (7.48Mbps). By line, Ymobile’s 34.90 Mbps was the fastest, followed by UQ mobile’s 23.85 Mbps and mineo (A plan)’ s 15.87 Mbps.

3. What is the measurement result at 14:00 when you can expect a relatively high speed?
Next, let’s take a look at the results from around Tokyo Station at 14:00, when the break time is over, the use of smartphones is settled down, and the speed is recovering.
