Nissan’s middle-sized SUV “X-Trail” has undergone a full model change for the first time in nine years, and sales began on July 25, 2022.

The main features of the new X-TRAIL are that the new “e-POWER” of the 2nd generation is installed in all grades and that “e-4 ORCE” is adopted in the 4WD model. This time, I took a test drive of the new X-Trail on Nissan’s test course, so I would like to give you an overview of the vehicle such as driving performance and comfort.
The horizontal appearance has an advantage in terms of ease of driving. The bonnet comes into view, making it easy to see the width of the vehicle and the position of the tip of the body. It is also characteristic that the front side of the lick is easy to see from between the front pillar and the door mirror. The visibility behind the lick is also good. Moreover, the minimum turning radius is within 5.4m, which improves the small turning performance compared to the previous 5.6m without changing the wheelbase. Parallel parking will also be easy to do.

As for the interior, the texture around the instrument panel is satisfactory. It is equipped with a soft pad, and the horizontal design provides good visibility and operability.
The front seats have plenty of size, and when you sit down, your body sinks moderately to the seating surface, giving it a voluminous feel. It firmly supports your lower back and stabilizes your sitting posture, making it suitable for long-distance travel. The rear seats are characterized by a large space above and below the feet. Four adults with a height of 170 cm are on board, and two and a half grips of magnolia kobus fit on the knees of the occupants sitting in the back seats. In addition, the feet of the occupants sitting in the rear seats can easily fit under the front seats, making it comfortable for four people to ride.

The new X-Trail also has a lineup of 7-seater specifications with three rows of seats, but the third row seats serve as auxiliary seats installed in the luggage compartment. This is because the size is small and the space between the floor and the seat is not enough, so when an adult sits down, the knees rise greatly. When 6 adults get on board, the foot space narrows, and the second row seats are slid forward, and the knee space of the second and third row seats must be grasped in both seats and seated to about half of the Kobusi. I can’t. Also, when an adult 170 cm tall sits in the third row of seats, his head touches the ceiling. Therefore, adults will only be able to sit in the first to third row seats and move in large numbers for short distances.
The floor of the luggage compartment is SUV, so it is high, but since the rear gate is not laid down so much, it is easy to load tall luggage. The loadability as an SUV will be excellent.

And the most noticeable is the power unit. All grades are equipped with advanced e-POWER. In the case of e-POWER, the engine is responsible for power generation and the motor drives the tires. The engine for power generation was an in-line 3-cylinder 1.2-liter engine in the conventional e-POWER, but it has been renewed to an in-line 3-cylinder 1.5-liter engine in the new X-TRAIL.

This in-line 3-cylinder 1.5-liter engine has advanced features that change the compression ratio from 8.0 to 14.0, and is also equipped with a VC turbo. The reason is improved efficiency. During cruising with less engine load, increase the compression ratio to 14.0 to reduce fuel consumption. And when high power performance is required for acceleration and climbing, the compression ratio is lowered to 8.0 and the turbo is operated to actively generate electricity.

This time, we tested two 4WD X / e-4ORCE and Otec e-4ORCE. The maximum output of both motors is 150kW (204PS) on the front wheel side and the maximum torque is 330Nm (33.6kgf ・ m), and the maximum output on the rear wheel side is 100kW (136PS) and the maximum torque is 195Nm (19.9kgf ・ m). m).
When you test drive the new X-Trail, you can feel the power of the motor from the start. If you step on the accelerator pedal more, the speed will increase linearly like a car equipped with e-POWER, but it is very easy to drive. As mentioned above, I can’t feel that the compression ratio is changed, and the driving feeling is really natural.

Depending on the acceleration method, the engine speed may increase in advance, and the speed may be increased to follow this, but I do not feel any discomfort. When the engine turned to the high rpm range, I heard the rough noise peculiar to the 3-cylinder engine, but it was not jarring. Also, when the drive battery is fully charged, it starts only by driving the motor, and then the engine starts, but at that time, I do not get the impression that the noise suddenly increases. Overall, I felt that the performance and driving feeling of e-POWER were finished to a high degree of perfection that would satisfy users.
