A review of the high performance of the Canon “EOS R3”. “Musou.” Is a catch phrase full-size mirrorless

The Canon “EOS R3” is a full-size mirrorless camera for high-end cameras that has a body with an integrated vertical grip and a higher speed than the flagship single-lens reflex camera “EOS-1D X Mark III.” It is Canon’s self-confidence work with the catch phrase “Musou.” In this article, I would like to review the high performance of such “EOS R3” again.
AF that is even easier to use than the “EOS R5 / R6”
The AF system of the “EOS R3” has a high-performance “dual pixel CMOS” in which all pixels have both imaging surface phase-difference AF and imaging functions, with a maximum range-finding area of approximately 100% horizontal x 100% vertical. AF II “. The function name is the same as “EOS R5 / R6”, but “EOS R3” has mainly evolved from “EOS R5 / R6” as follows.

・ High-speed AF frame rate of 60fps / AF speed of up to about 0.03 seconds
・ Independent subject tracking function
・ Equipped with line-of-sight input function
・ Low brightness limit improved to EV-7.5

This time, I tried to shoot wild birds with a combination of “EOS R3”, “RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM” and “EXTENDER RF2x”. I got the impression that it was even easier to use. By improving the AF speed, followability, and low brightness limit, it is possible to focus more reliably even in scenes that are difficult for AF, such as shooting moving objects in slightly dim scenes. The “EOS R5 / R6” has sufficient AF performance, but the “EOS R3” is even better.

Along with such improvements in basic performance, it has become possible to track subjects with higher flexibility, which is also a point of improved usability. Until now, “Face + Tracking Priority AF” for tracking people and animals and various AF areas were in the same menu called “AF Method”, but with “EOS R3”, “Subject Tracking” As the function is independent. As a result, subject tracking and AF area can be set separately, and tracking start / stop can be easily switched by button operation (default setting is M-Fn2). If you want to roughly follow the subject over the entire screen, turn on tracking, and if you want to operate Servo AF in any AF area, turn off tracking.
One of the AF-related functions that has received a lot of attention is the line-of-sight input function. With the unique function of detecting the photographer’s line of sight and moving the AF frame / AF area to the position of the line of sight, it can be conveniently used when you want to track a specific subject when multiple subjects are on the screen. .. There is a slight quirk in the operation, and there is a feeling that framing is neglected if you try to determine the AF position only with this function, so it is only an auxiliary one, but it is an interesting function to use. In addition, it may not work well when using glasses or contact lenses, individual differences such as eye condition, and usage environment. If you want to take full advantage of this feature, you should check the operation in advance.
As for AF-related operability, it features a smart controller at the position of the back thumb, similar to the “EOS-1D X Mark III.” In the operation system that also serves as the AF start button, if you touch the controller and perform a slide operation, the AF frame will move according to the movement of your finger, and if you press it as it is, AF will start. You can move the AF frame and perform AF operations with just your thumb, which is convenient when you want to react quickly to the movement of the subject. By setting the amount of movement (sensitivity) with respect to the slide, it is possible to adjust the size of the movement width of the AF frame.
Ultra-high-speed continuous shooting of up to about 30 frames per second is possible with all “RF lenses”
Among the performance and functions of the “EOS R3”, the continuous shooting performance is particularly suitable for the catch phrase “Musou”. By combining the 35mm full-size back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor (effective pixels: up to approximately 24.1 million pixels), which is the first to be installed in the “EOS series”, with the high-performance video engine “DIGIC X”, the processing speed has been greatly improved. As a full-size machine, it will be the fastest as of April 2022 along with Sony’s “α1”, with AF / AE tracking up to about 30 frames per second (* highest at electronic shutter, mechanical shutter, electronic front curtain) It achieves ultra-high-speed continuous shooting (about 12 frames per second).
To obtain a speed of 30 frames per second, there are conditions such as a shutter speed of 1/125 seconds or more and flicker reduction processing off, and as of April 2022, all “RF lenses” support 30 frames / second continuous shooting. What you are doing is a high point. Many models of “EF lenses” for single-lens reflex cameras, mainly “L lenses”, are compatible. The sustainability of continuous shooting is also sufficient, and the number of continuous shots is 540 for JPEG (L), 420 for C-RAW, 400 for C-RAW + JPEG (L), and 150 for RAW + JPEG (L) and RAW. ing.

In addition, the “EOS R3” is easy to use during high-speed continuous shooting. In addition to supporting blackout-free shooting during high-speed continuous shooting, we devised a display so that it is easy to grasp the timing of shooting start, blackout immediately before the first shot, and no blackout after the second shot. Has been done. It also supports strobe shooting with an electronic shutter (synchronization speed 1/180 second), and blackout-free strobe continuous shooting is also possible. When inter-frame dimming is performed, the maximum speed is about 15 frames / sec, and when inter-frame dimming is not performed, the maximum speed is about 20 frames / sec.
