Looking at the TV situation in 2022, there is no doubt that the adoption of “quantum dot” technology for achieving high image quality is one of the trends.

Of particular note is its use in LCD TVs. After obtaining a wide color gamut (high color reproducibility) with quantum dot technology, a mini LED backlight is used to achieve high contrast at the same time. This is the latest trend in high-end LCD TVs.

TVS REGZA (Toshiba)’s “REGZA” will actively adopt this quantum dot technology, and the 2022 model will also have a lineup of LCD TVs that are not combined with mini LEDs. Although the mini LED, which enhances the contrast of images by individually driving fine backlights, is intuitively easy to understand, it is a little more difficult to understand the merits of quantum dot technology. A media briefing was held there to promote the merits of wide-color gamut quantum dot technology. What are the merits of quantum dot technology that TVS REGZA thinks? Let me tell you about it.

The 2022 Regza that uses quantum dot technology is as follows. The “Z875L/Z870L” series is a model equipped with a mini LED backlight, and the “Z770L” and “Z670L” are models that use only quantum dot technology.
First of all, TVS REGZA introduced the conditions for high image quality of TV. It consists of the three elements of “details,” “natural colors,” and “contrast,” and when these elements reach a high level overall, it brings the world closer to what the naked eye can see.

“Fineness” is achieved with a resolution of 4K or higher, and for “contrast”, the use of an organic EL panel and a mini LED on the liquid crystal panel have enhanced the power of expression. Quantum dot technology is attracting attention as to how to enhance the expressiveness of “natural colors.”

Quantum dots in displays such as televisions are a collection of hundreds to thousands of semiconductor particles, and a technology that converts incident light into a different color. When exposed to blue light, it has the property of emitting different colors according to the size of the quantum dot. By strictly controlling the size of the quantum dots, reproducibility with a short wavelength width and high color purity can be expected.
The basic concept of this technology is to place a sheet in which quantum dots are “kneaded” in front of a blue LED backlight to achieve efficient color conversion and high-purity color reproduction at the same time. Conventional LCD TVs combine color filters with a backlight that emits white light to extract R (red), G (green), and B (blue). It was inevitable. By using quantum dot technology, we can expect to improve such conversion efficiency problems.

Actually, this quantum dot technology is not so new. At CES in early 2017, Samsung promoted TVs that adopted quantum dot technology as “QLED TVs,” and the recognition among users gradually increased. Of course, TVS REGZA had been researching the technology for a long time, but it was at this time that we found the significance of incorporating it into actual products.

It seems that there was a judgment that even if there was a theoretical color gamut expansion effect, the impact could not be maximized without increasing the brightness. One way to maximize brightness is to use it in combination with a mini LED backlight, but even without using a mini LED, current technology seems to be able to increase the brightness of conventional backlights and take advantage of the wide color gamut. With that in mind, we decided to release the “Z770L” and “Z670L” series.

In addition to simply expanding the range of color reproduction to increase brightness, it is ultimately important to manage the ability to expand the range of reproduction. Vividly projecting primary colors does not necessarily lead to “natural colors.” It was also explained that REGZA’s strength lies in its ability to manage intermediate colors, which require processing by a video engine. Originally, REGZA’s image engine had a function called “color image control” that governs color reproduction, but with the appearance of a panel with high potential that can make use of it, it is said that high image quality expression has been refined.
The meaning that the model number “Z” has in successive REGZA is great. The “Z” was crowned as a highly recommended model with high specs, high performance, and a reasonable price, in other words, a high cost performance in the true sense. Although it was only briefly touched on at this briefing, the “Z770L” is a multifunctional product that also has the “time shift machine (complete record) function” that REGZA boasts. “There are many products with “Z” in the model number this season, but the royal road of “Z” may be the Z770L,” says Hiroshi Motomura, general manager of the REGZA brand. Finally, when you hear the word quantum dot, you may think of organic EL. It is the organic EL panel “QD-OLED” supplied by Samsung Display. This panel, which combines a blue organic EL panel with quantum dot technology, has already been used in Sony’s “BRAVIA A95K” and others.

Although it is a quantum dot “preferred” REGZA, the organic EL TV currently uses only the RGBW color filter type panel supplied by LG Display. After all, it is necessary to realize high image quality in a well-balanced manner among the three major elements mentioned at the beginning, and it is not possible to give priority only to the wide color gamut of quantum dots.

There is no doubt that the organic EL panel of LG Display is also constantly evolving. On the other hand, we must keep an eye on the development of quantum dot technology for organic EL panels in the future.
